Lord Krishna (Dwarkadhish)

Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh

Dwarkadhish Gopal Mandir

Overview

A grand 19th-century Krishna temple in the heart of Ujjain's market, known for its Maratha architecture and the Harihar Milan festival.

History

Gopal Mandir, also called the Dwarkadhish temple, is the second largest temple in Ujjain after Mahakaleshwar. It was built in the 19th century by Bayaja Bai Shinde, queen of the Maratha ruler Daulatrao Scindia, and is a fine example of Maratha temple architecture. The main deity is Lord Krishna as Dwarkadhish, with images of Shiva, Parvati and Garuda also in the temple. Janmashtami is celebrated with great devotion, and on Vaikuntha Chaturdashi the Harihar Milan procession brings Lord Mahakal to meet Lord Krishna here.
